So just out of curiosity, how many of you have done this? Secondly, what are the ramifications of doing it?
A.) Does it void your warranty? I would think not since they have an option under System Settings for doing it, but big companies can be gay on hardware warranties.
B.) Do I have to bother with backing up all my stuff such as profiles, saved games, rosters, videos, etc?
C.) How handy is it? I heard that at least one OS had the XMB in its application menu. That I would find as rather handy since I could easily do more computer-based stuff and jump into PS3 options quickly.

I have...
A) No it does not void your warranty, and even if it does mine is over with anyways so it doesn't matter...
B)Profiles No, Everything else yes, just put them on an external HDD, heads up your profile names at the login screen get deleted so make sure you know the order of your accounts in the XMB.
C)Its somewhat handy, I don't really use it because YDL has not come up with a way to access the WiFi card in the PS3, so I'm kinda out of luck for using the internet. It takes 2-3 minutes to go from YDL to XMB, its really easy though

I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu on it since I'm more familiar with it. That might be a potential option for you to try to get the wifi card working.

I think I'm going to do this right away when I buy a larger hard drive, since if it fails I'll have the old one as a backup. One thing I do wonder about though would be windows (or linux MARSH) ability to cope with all the PS3 components. Are there 6-core CPU drivers out there? or for the RX graphics processors? P.S. I just realised that the ps3 has, if numerical progression from "quad" core is true, a "sex core" processor. Could be hex though, idk when the difference matters

I don't know about Windows, but I definitely know it's all been done using various Linux distros. I find there to be a much more friendly internet community for Linux stuff too for when you need help getting something working. I just heard tonight that supposedly if you cluster 8 PS3's you officially have a supercomputer. And Bnick, I believe you may have a point on the "sex core" processor. Kudos!

They do have to be clustered properly to count as a supercomputer though...
